Historically, MOT Testing Stations do not like modified vehicles of any kind. Mainly, this is because individual MOT 'Nominated Testers' (NT) view modified and customised cars as a potential source of problems between them and VOSA.
This is because modified and customised vehicles are, by nature of what they are, non-standard and in many cases have after-market features added (larger/wider wheels, 'wide' bodies, tinted windows, xenon lights, customised seats and seat-belts, etc) or removed – (straight-through exhausts, lowered spring and/or suspension, bumpers, door-handles, etc) - all of these modifications (as well as many more) put far more onus on the individual NT to interpret their VOSA mandate correctly in testing the vehicle - and of course, the easiest and, in the misguided view of many NT's, the safest route for them, is to fail such vehicles when presented for an MOT test, thus safeguarding their MOT qualification and livelihood.
MOTMAX.co.uk NT's are all carefully briefed, as well as having taken a VOSA 'refresher' course. Part of their brief is our corporate approach to modified/customised vehicles.
Simply put, the MOTMAX.co.uk attitude to all such vehicles is absolutely no different than that to all other standard vehicles presented for test. However, the MOTMAX.co.uk approach to all vehicles, in line with current VOSA guidelines, is in many cases very much at odds with the old ways and the old days of 'Phil and Grant under the arches' - WE DON'T WANT TO FAIL YOU and your car will NOT fail it's MOT at MOTMAX.co.uk unless it HAS to.
We do NOT do repairs or service vehicles, so have no vested interest for you not to pass.
All that said - given the confusion that surrounds what constitutes a 'fail' of the MOT - there are a few simple guidelines for all you guys whose MOT's are due and who are thinking of presenting their pride and joy for MOT at MOTMAX.co.uk .
PLEASE REMEMBER - these are guidelines specifically aimed at the owners of and modified vehicles and they are designed to assist you; there are of course many other aspects to an MOT test all of which apply to all vehicles.
